Course overview

Homelessness, suicide, and self-harm rates continue to plague the LGBTQ+ community despite great strides made in society at large towards love and acceptance. Many parents still struggle when finding out that their child is not straight or may not be gender normative. When confronted with a client who is struggling with their child's gender identity or affectional orientation counselors need to have the tools to address the parents' coming out process, ambiguous loss, and forming a new identity. This interactive webinar looks at how counselors can help this problem from a different angle by helping the family members of LGBTQ+ individuals using Narrative therapy techniques. This interactive webinar also offers discussions on family dynamics and practical strategies for applying Narrative therapy techniques in session. Counselor countertransference is another issue that can easily arise with this emotionally charged topic, and this webinar will discuss this phenomenon while also looking at ways to address countertransference.
