Course overview

This course offers foundational information and Clinical Tips on Acute and Chronic LBP, including epidemiology & etiology, disease characteristics, classification by pain patterns, differentiating neuropathic vs. nociceptive pain, LBP evaluation tools, risk factors for converting from an acute to chronic condition. It reviews the general treatment approach for Acute LBP, and provides an overview of multiple treatment approaches for Chronic LBP. It also provides a summary of efficacy studies of the treatments reviewed. In addition, this course includes a unique approach to learning through the dissection of a detailed Clinical Case Scenario, demonstrating and reviewing concepts covered in Module 21 on Acute & Chronic LBP.

Course Goals

Upon completion of this course, the Therapist will:

1. Be able to ANALYZE and INTERPRET the clinical presentations and contributing factors in patients with Acute & Chronic LBP (cLBP).

2. IDENTIFY patients at risk for converting from an ACUTE LBP into a CHRONIC LBP patient.

3. LEARN general treatment approaches and their efficacy, when used in the management of patients with Acute and Chronic LBP.

4. CLINICAL APPLICATION: be able to APPLY interpretation of Module 21 concepts in the analysis of a clinical case scenario.


Course Objectives

1. Review the Epidemiology, Etiology, and characteristic facts about acute & chronic LBP.

2. IDENTIFY LBP patient Classification based on pain pattern.

3. CLINICLLY IDENTIFY and DIFFERENTIATE Neuropathic pain symptoms from Nociceptive pain.

4. Learn about standard Evaluation Tools used for LBP.

5. IDENTIFY patient risk factors for converting from Acute LBP to Chronic LBP.

6. Review Treatment-Based LBP classification systems and efficacy studies on each system.

7. LEARN current general treatment approach to Acute LBP.

8. LEARN various treatment approaches to Chronic LBP and review the summary of efficacy studies on each treatment covered.

9. CLINICAL APPLICATION: apply Module 21 concepts in the dissection of a detailed Clinical Case Scenario history and physical exam to derive a therapy diagnosis and management plan for this case, including some treatment components.
