Reaching Forward: Current Trends in Adult Brachial Plexus Injury Management

Course overview

Traumatic brachial plexus injury in adult patients can be devastating to function and occupational participation. Depending on the level of injury, patients often experience serious motor and sensory deficits to the upper extremity. The management of brachial plexus injuries is challenging, primarily focused on maximizing use of the affected arm. Recent advancements in surgical techniques, including nerve repair, nerve grafts, and nerve transfers, in conjunction with dynamic and extensive rehabilitation programs, have improved functional expectations following this injury. In this webinar we aim to educate clinicians on the most common injury patterns and current trends in nonoperative and operative management. We will identify the most functionally important upper extremity actions to restore during all stages of rehabilitation. We will review techniques to promote neuroplasticity, maintenance of range of motion, orthosis fabrication and psychosocial support, as well as practical exercises and adaptive techniques to ensure a patient's return to a productive life.
