Course overview

Dialectical Behavior Therapy 2-Day Overview Workshop Description Presented by: Nancy Gordon, LCSW Tampa Bay Center for Cognitive Behavior Therapy Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT, Linehan, 1993) was developed by Marsha M. Linehan, Ph.D. at the University of Washington. DBT is a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment which combines cognitive behavioral theory and eastern mindfulness for individuals who meet criteria for borderline personality disorder, especially those at high risk for life-threatening or other chronic and severe dysfunctional behaviors. DBT has also been researched to be successful in treating people diagnosed with eating disorders, substance abuse disorders, depression, and PTSD. In addition, DBT has been adapted to work with difficult to treat children, adolescents and their families. Because of the success of DBT, programs from all levels of care; outpatient, inpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospital programs and even school settings have incorporated the model and are using DBT to assist with rapid stabilization of self harm behaviors, suicidal ideation, and other crisis behaviors. This 2-Day training is designed to provide an introduction to the philosophy of DBT, the coping skills, and core DBT interventions used to reinforce adaptive coping and stability. Participants will leave the workshop with an exposure to the treatment model, the research behind it, specific tools and interventions to use, and where to go for further, more intensive training. This training is a beginner training for clinicians and others who are in the initial stages of implementation in their settings.
