Course overview

Peer support specialists positively impact the recovery process for many people. The benefit of their lived experience with recovery impacts engagement, treatment outcomes, treatment costs, and quality of life for individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). Working closely with people recovering from SUD can also be challenging for peer support specialists, given that they are working on their own recovery at the same time. This course will provide you with information about the challenges peer support specialists face in this regard. You will also learn ways they can apply core competencies to reduce the impact of these challenges and support others in recovery. Inclusion of SAMHSA content does not constitute or imply endorsement or recommendation by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or the U.S. Government.
