Course overview

Discussion of the etiology and assessment of eating disorders, including how the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) defines the diagnostic criteria, prevalence, and complications of eating disorders; the factors that may influence the development of eating disorders, the instruments used in the assessment of eating disorders, and reporting and cultural considerations. Eating disorders are serious and often fatal illnesses that are associated with severe disturbances in peoples eating behaviors, related thoughts, and emotions. Eating disorders typically develop in adolescence and young adulthood and may impact an individuals physical, psychological, and social functions. Eating disorders affect up to five percent of the population and often co-occur with other psychiatric disorders. Individuals with eating disorders may appear to be healthy, but can actually be quite ill. Nurses and other healthcare providers need to be aware of how best to identify individuals who have an eating disorder so that they may be referred to the appropriate resources for assistance and treatment.
