Survival rates for cancer are approaching 70%. That means that the majority of people treated for cancer will survive. The bad news is that more than 60% of those survivors experience functional impairments that prohibit them from completing their daily activities and nearly 1/3 suffer chronic disability. It does not have to be that way! Cancer treatments and their side effects negatively impact function, but rehabilitation interventions can significantly alter this trajectory of functional decline. In fact, most individuals receiving rehabilitation during and after treatment recover their full function. This course will provide you with an understanding of common cancer disease treatments and their side effects, we will review prevalent functional impairments associated with the most commonly diagnosed cancers, and will identify evidence-based interventions that should be included in a rehabilitation plan of care. Case studies will be presented throughout to review differential diagnosis, assessment, and intervention strategies.
