Course overview

This webinar series will present participants with current knowledge about the welfare of dogs used for breeding as well as their offspring. We will discuss methods used to assess the welfare of dogs used for breeding using reliable indicators from the animal themselves and their housing environments. We will also discuss the animal welfare problems associated with breeding for certain traits, such as conformations that result in brachycephaly. Current policies on these topics will be discussed from both a North American and an international perspective, as well as recommendations for how best to mitigate some of the animal welfare problems currently associated with dog breeding. The focus of the program will be on the role of the veterinarian in helping to resolve some of these concerns.
