Course overview

Through didactic presentations, case studies, group discussions, self-reflection and applied practice, this 6-hour workshop provides psychologists with foundational knowledge, skills and abilities essential to the effective treatment of insomnia in clinical practice. Psychologists, Clinical Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Mental Health Counselors will learn the basics of sleep, the relationship between sleep and health, the nature of insomnia and sleep deprivation, how to evaluate sleep difficulties and diagnose insomnia, and how to properly use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia techniques such as stimulus control, sleep hygiene, relaxation and mindfulness, and worry management. Ethical considerations, including when to refer clients and seek consultation will also be addressed.
