Course overview

The use of Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) for musculoskeletal disorders has increased dramatically among rehabilitation specialists over the past decade. This course will present the best available evidence for the clinical use of IASTM in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders involving the spine and extremities. Lecture material will be supplemented with video presentations of 70 treatment techniques for common musculoskeletal conditions, including postural issues, myofascial pain syndrome, overuse & sports injuries, and post-surgical conditions. The integration of functional fascial anatomy will be discussed as it applies to the treatment protocols. Treatment principles of IASTM, including recommended treatment time, degree of applied force and proper sequencing of physical therapy interventions will be discussed, based on scientific principles and expert opinion. Contraindications, precautions, and normal/abnormal tissue response to IASTM will be presented. Case studies are used to reinforce learning through practical applications.
