Course overview

This course for new Infection Preventionists is intended for nurses that are new to the position of Infection Preventionist. This 20-hour course will provide the basics of learning key aspects of the role that are necessary to begin the job of an Infection Preventionist. This interactive course provides opportunities for learners to ask questions and participate in case studies. Attendees will be provided with the Pathway Health Infection Prevention and Control Manual as a reference guide. Objectives: Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to: 1. Describe the role of the Infection Preventionist 2. Describe the daily responsibilities of the Infection Preventionist 3. Verbalize the key components of an effective Infection Prevention and Control Program 4. Describe the principles of Standard and Transmission-Based Precautions 5. Identify implementation of a system to prevent healthcare-associated infections 6. Discuss the two types of surveillance and how to implement them in the facility 7. Verbalize interdisciplinary team involvement, education and competency with infection prevention and control 8. Verbalize the understanding of the importance of employees, residents, families, visitors and practitioners on the infection control practices and antibiotic stewardship 9. Outline an education process for new and existing employees for best practices 10. Describe how to access key resources for updated information for program inclusion 11. Describe the role of the Infection Preventionist in the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) process 12. Describe the essential role of the Infection Preventionist in supporting all departments with infection prevention and control
