"When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower." This saying by Alexander Den Heijer is an excellent analogy for how we, as veterinary teams, should be thinking about managing burnout in our hospitals. More than ever, team members are facing emotional exhaustion, disengagement, and a low sense of personal accomplishment, and the root of the issues lies in their environment (i.e., workplace). Like plants without water or sun, employees without the necessary resources to do the job that they aspire to will never survive. Join Dr. Debbie Stoewen as she sticks her green thumb into this important issue, and shares ways that burnout can be prevented by promoting a sustainable workplace, one in which everyone can thrive (flora or fauna).
