Course overview
This course discusses the dual disorders recovery counseling (DDRC) approach which integrates the treatment of patients with drug use disorders and comorbid psychiatric disorders. This model, which also integrates individual and group addiction counseling approaches with psychiatric interventions, attempts to balance the focus of treatment so that both the patient's addiction and psychiatric issues are addressed. Learning Objectives: * Review the theoretical rationale underlying the DDRC interventions. * Review the biological, psychological, and cultural/social factors that cause or maintain psychiatric and addictive illnesses. * Review the appropriate counselor characteristics and training for treating dually diagnosed patients. * Review the session format and content of DDRC. * Review related issues for DDRC such as client-counselor relationship, target populations, and assessment.
