Course overview

Airway mucus plays a critical role in protecting the respiratory tract against toxins and microorganisms. Disease states associated with abnormal mucus production or airway clearance increase the risk of infection and airway obstruction, and mucoactive medications for airway clearance are frequently prescribed. However, there is a lack of evidence-based support for many of these agents. As specialists in caring for patients with cardiopulmonary conditions, respiratory therapists play a vital role in optimizing the use of airway clearance medications.
