Arthritis is a common disease among the aging population, affecting 60% of adults over 65 years of age. Early diagnosis and understanding the associated risk factors are needed to insure effective treatment. Certain forms of arthritis are autoimmune diseases, in which the body attacks its own tissues. Though there are over 100 different types of arthritis, this home study course addresses the three most common forms: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Different causes, diagnostic procedures, and treatments are explored. Different factors can lead to the development of arthritis, including age, obesity, gender, injury, infection, and genetic predisposition, each of which is discussed in this study course. Arthritis generally affects older individuals, however it is not limited to the aging population. Arthritis is more likely in people with an increased body mass index, and certain viral and bacterial infections can lead to arthritis. Women have a greater risk of developing arthritis; estrogens are believed to play a role in the development of this disease. Early diagnosis of arthritis can lead to effective treatment. The numerous diagnostic procedures that exist for arthritis are outlined in the home study course. Different procedures may be used depending on the type of arthritis to be diagnosed. Various blood tests, examination of synovial fluid, x-rays, MRI, and CT scans are used to diagnose different types of arthritis. Once arthritis has been diagnosed, a course or treatment is established from the numerous treatment options available. Arthritis treatment is varied, from simple analgesics to relieve the pain associated with joint inflammation, to invasive surgery when a total joint replacement is needed. In addition to medical treatment, non-medical therapies are available for the treatment of arthritis. Different therapies such as heat and cold therapy can ease the pain of arthritis. Proper diet and exercise are also important to maintain overall health. In the case of gout, diet is extremely important, as alcohol and foods high in purines should be avoided. Many arthritis sufferers choose to use the dietary supplements glucosamine and chrondroitin sulfate, thought to aid in the repair of cartilage. Though a widespread disease, arthritis has many effective treatment options for the patient, and this home study course provides a proficient overview and update of arthritis and rheumatic diseases.
