Course overview

Domestic violence is a prevalent and serious issue in our society. Domestic violence is a dangerous and repeated situation, yet a preventable problem. Violence against women is a worldwide occurrence affecting the health of women and their children in every nation and in all social classes. Domestic violence (DV) does not discriminate according to color, culture, ethnicity, marital status, age, sexual orientation or social class. Three-fourths of domestic violence victims are women. Domestic violence is a major public health problem in the United States and around the world. It is more prevalent than rape or assault by strangers or acquaintances. Research has been unable to confirm a particular psychological or cultural profile of abused women by their intimate partners. Abuse takes many forms, ranging from serious physical injury and sexual assault to progressive social isolation, emotional abuse (e.g., withholding money, lying about assets), humiliation, intimidation, economic abuse and progressive imprisonment and control. All abusive relationships are about power and control.
