Fine Motor and UE Gross Motor Treatment Interventions

Course overview

In this 4-hour, view-on-demand, recorded webinar, participants explore motor learning principles, typical fine motor developmental milestones, and gradation techniques for over 300 pediatric treatment ideas to improve functional performance in daily activities. The presenter addresses a variety of fine motor skills, including finger isolation, thumb opposition, force modulation, pencil grasp, handwriting development (i.e., sizing, spacing, and alignment), and cutting development. Additionally, gross motor treatment intervention strategies include forearm supination, wrist deviation, wrist extension, bilateral coordination (symmetrical, reciprocal, and asymmetrical), crossing midline, as well as shoulder/scapular range of motion. Participants leave with a plethora of new, functional treatment intervention activities to implement immediately into practice. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) describe the use of forward and backward chaining for the breakdown of fine motor skill development toward more patient-centered practice; (2) list ways to grade a treatment task up or down to further facilitate motor skill development; (3) describe three variations of skill practice opportunities using play to increase client participation and success; (4) identify upper extremity gross motor skills that are appropriate for home exercise programs within natural environments; (5) list novel treatment activities for gross motor skill development; and (6) identify age-appropriate activities for a given case study, focusing on the following gross motor skills (supination, wrist extension, bilateral coordination, and crossing midline). This distance-learning, interactive format is offered at 0.4 CEUs, Introductory Level, OT Service Delivery, and targeted to introductory- to intermediate-level OTs and COTAs. The course instructor, Emily Bourque, MS, OTR/L, CBIS, graduated from the University of New Hampshire with her master's degree in 2016. She grew up with a younger sister who has Down syndrome. Attending IEP meetings and advocating for her sister molded her OT mindset long before graduation. Emily has worked in a variety of settings including skilled nursing, inpatient rehabilitation, schools, early intervention, and outpatient pediatrics. She has created resources and interactive activities for her clients and collaborated with local optometrists to implement a pediatric vision program.
