Building Self-Advocacy and Self-Determination Skills in Children and Teens

Course overview

Self-advocacy includes the ability to understand yourself and your surroundings and then communicate on your behalf. This process is as simple as choosing a sensory activity or as complex as advocating for services at a university. This critical skill is important for autonomy and independence. In this highly practical and extremely timely 90-minute , view-on-demand, recorded webinar, participants learn the stages of self-advocacy as well as suggestions for strategies and activities for all ages and ability levels. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) identify the three key stages of self-advocacy, (2) list activities for a wide range of ability levels at each of the key stages, and (3) describe resources for promoting self-advocacy in school, community, and clinic settings. This distance-learning, independent format is offered at 0.15 CEUs, Introductory Level, OT Service Delivery, and targeted to introductory- to intermediate-level OTs, COTAs, and other professionals.
