Course overview
Despite spending the highest percentage on healthcare, maternal mortality rates are highest in the U.S. compared to other developed countries (Melillo, 2020). The leading cause of maternal death in the U.S. is cardiovascular conditions, but other chronic conditions present in pregnancy such as diabetes, sickle cell disease, and thyroid disease can lead to poor outcomes (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists [ACOG], 2019). Recognizing the risk factors and symptoms of chronic conditions in pregnancy will help implement early interventions and management strategies to improve maternal and fetal health. The goal of this course is to educate nurses and registered dietitians/nutritionists in the acute care setting on diabetes and other chronic conditions in pregnancy.
