Course overview

OBJECTIVES Chapter 1: Strengthening Community-Based Services and Advocacy for Victims 1. Discuss what communities can do to advocate for victims of domestic violence. 2. Describe the evolution of the antirape movement and describe the disturbing patterns that emerged. Chapter 2: Improving the Health and Mental Health Care Systems' Responses to Violence Against Women 1. Identify what the Health and Mental Health Care Systems can do to advocate for victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. 2. Identify the adverse mental health effects resulting from violence against women. 3. Discuss the appropriate standards of care for clinical health and mental health care providers - when treating victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. 4. Discuss the broader reforms of institutions and policies that affect health care delivery and inform public health strategies. 5. Describe specific actions that -- a. health care professionals, b. mental health professionals, c. victim service providers, d. advocacy groups, e. public and private health care funders, and f. federal, state, and local government researchers can take to help end violence against women.
