Course overview

The population of older adults continues to increase. According to the Administration on Aging (2020), there were 54.1 million adults in the U.S. over the age of 65 in 2019 and by 2040 there will be about 80.8 million older adults. The aging process is one that brings with it a need for increased medical care. Age also puts people at an increased risk for many chronic conditions, including heart failure, diabetes, and dementia. By understanding the aging process, you can help to slow the process, manage the challenges, and improve quality of life for those in your care. One of the most significant steps to achieve this is to encourage older adults to become more physically active. This course discusses the changes a person experiences as they age as well as how physical activity impacts those changes.
