Course overview
Total joint replacement or arthroplasty is one of the most dependable and safest procedures today (Crow, 2020). Patients who undergo a hip or knee arthroplasty are likely to enjoy their new joint for 20 years or more. The American Joint Replacement Registrys annual report in 2021 indicated that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, data from a total of 2,244,587 hip and knee procedures had been collected, indicating a procedural volume increase of over 18% when compared to the annual report of 2020 (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons [AAOS], 2021a). By understanding the basis of the arthritic changes that damage joints, recognizing indications for total joint arthroplasty, and reviewing the surgical procedures and possible complications of joint replacement surgery, nurses can provide more competent care.
