Introduction to Rural Nursing: The Center of Care for 60 Million Americans - 4 Contact Hours

Course overview

As the largest segment of the rural healthcare workforce, nurses provide much of healthcare to the sixty-five million people who live and work in remote and resource poor settings (Rural Health Information Hub, 2020). Rural populations experience inequities in health and healthcare with higher rates of chronic illness, higher poverty levels, disruptions in access to quality healthcare, and tend to have higher proportions of elderly residents than urban populations (Rural Health Information Hub, 2020). This 4 hour course provides evidence and strategies to help rural nurses, and those aspiring to create their nursing practice in a rural setting, to understand how they might help to close the gaps that create inequities in rural health. This introductory course provides information on the roles and responsibilities of rural nurses in five practice settings that are common across states, reservations, and island territories.
