Course overview
Psychiatric care is frequently placed in a category of its own, outside of general medicine, leaving many providers and pharmacists alike uncomfortable with the appropriate care of psychiatric patients. Through discussions with local pharmacy organizations and colleagues, it is clear that a review of psychiatric pharmacy would be helpful to increase patient care in this area. The activity will review common medication classes and specific medications utilized in the psychiatric practice, mainly antidepressants and antipsychotics. General treatment strategies will be reviewed for the treatment of patients with depressive disorders and side effect management will be discussed for both classes of medications.
