Course overview

Polypharmacy, the simultaneous use of multiple drugs by one person to treat an illness, is a serious concern for many people managing health issues. Various factors lead to polypharmacy, including: multiple doctors treating multiple conditions, mental health concerns, living in a long term care facility, age, gender, and ineffective communication. Effects of polypharmacy are various, including but not limited to: drug interactions, health signs and/or symptoms of inappropriate polypharmacy use, financial hardships, and medication cascading. This nursing round table will review these concerns around polypharmacy and discuss how this relates to the care being provided for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
