SCHOOL SHOOTINGS: GUIDE TO PREVENTION, ASSESSMENT, AND INTERVENTION (5 CE)

Course overview

The focus of this course is on examining the thinking, planning, and other behaviors engaged in by students who carry out school attacks. Particular attention is given to identifying pre-attack behaviors and communications that may be detectable - or "knowable"-and can help in preventing some future attacks. Furthermore, this course sets forth a process for identifying, assessing, and managing students who may pose a threat of targeted violence in schools. This process is referred to as threat assessment. Learning Objectives: 1. Gain knowledge the characteristics of incidents of targeted school violence 2. Delineate the key findings of the Safe School Initiative study, including characterizing the attacker; conceptualizing, signaling, advancing, and resolving the attack 3. Evaluate the implications of the Safe School Initiative findings for the prevention of targeted school violence 4. Delineate the key characteristics of the implementation of the school threat assessment process 5. Establish the procedure for conducting a school threat assessment and managing a threatening situation 6. Develop an action plan for school leaders to implement a threat assessment program
