Course overview

A variety of legal concerns influence utilization management (UM) processes, including patient confidentiality requirements, professional liabilities, and malpractice issues. Patients rely on healthcare providers to uphold their best interests, but the individuals and institutions intended to protect patients can fail at times. Therefore, all healthcare professionals must understand basic legal principles and follow laws and regulations which affect their practice. The goal of this course is to equip nurses and social workers with knowledge of legal concerns associated with utilization management in the acute care setting.
