Pediatric Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Dental and Ocular Presentations

Course overview

Nurses are an integral part of the emergency department (ED) healthcare team and often are the first individuals the pediatric patient encounters. The role of the ED nurse is to identify quickly the often subtle signs and symptoms in the pediatric patient who presents to the ED acutely ill or injured; therefore, they need to have better understanding of their role in early identification, assessment, management and treatment modalities associated with the topics addressed in this course. In this activity, the focus of the topics of discussion in this course will be common conditions/emergencies found in each of the following involved body system(s): dental, ear/nose/throat, ocular and maxillofacial. After completing this activity, registered nurses should be able to: identify the most commonly seen conditions/emergencies seen in the pediatric population pertinent to the following systematic emergency topics of discussion: dental, ear-nose-throat (ENT), ocular and maxillofacial; and describe the identified condition/emergency, common assessment findings, and appropriate interventions for each of the topics of discussion outlined in this course.
