For some reason, many therapists have the idea that you should not work specifically or deeply in a pregnant woman's body. However, my experience tells me differently. I have worked with pregnant clients and yoga students for over 20 years and have been told many times how much the mamas appreciate that I don't give wimpy pregnancy massage. Pregnancy is a time when old dysfunctional tensional patterns tend to show up again, sometimes after years of dormancy. Pregnancy can be a time when mama has debilitating painful hip and low back pain, shoulder pain, and more discomfort. I will explain why that is and ways that you can work with your pregnant clients to help them feel the best they can during this special time. This is a dense, full training with a wealth of great information. I will use powerpoint presentations to discuss the anatomical changes to a pregnant woman's body relative to our massage work and the common symptoms that growing mamas will often have. I review hormonal changes and how pregnancy hormones can act to destabilize the pelvis, causing a host of issues in the hips and low back, even the knees. Students will learn a full body treatment which includes working with your clients supine and side lying. I will demonstrate how to support your clients well with props in each of these positions for safety and comfort. Mamas can't lie flat on their backs when face up, and when side lying their top leg has to be supported enough to alleviate pain in the hip. Students will clearly understand how to support their pregnant clients for this treatment.
