Strategies to Reduce Racial Disparity in Pregnant & Post-Partum Youth through Health Advocacy

Course overview

Approximately 700 women die in the U.S. each year as a result of pregnancy or its complications. As Black and AIAN women have higher rates of pregnancy-related deaths compared to White women, it's important to take a peek at potential reasons why so we can best eliminate disparities in health care and empower all women to thrive in pregnancy and postpartum. Webinar participants will be better prepared to provide services that are responsive to the needs of those in their care who are pregnant and postpartum so they can best advocate on their behalf. This training prepares learners to: -Describe racial disparity and how that might impact a person's access to quality healthcare. -Appreciate the effect of health disparities on women's reproductive health. -Recognize how racism may contribute to disparities in health care and pregnancy-related death. -Define healthcare advocacy. -Identify strategies for being an effective healthcare advocate for pregnant and postpartum youth. This training is appropriate for child welfare case managers, social workers, counselors and others who work with pregnant or postpartum youth, particularly youth who are impacted by disparities in healthcare quality and availability.
