Power, Privilege, and the Importance of Cultural Humility in Social Work Practice with LGBTQ+ Clients

Course overview

Social Workers and clients bring diverse identities, privileged and marginalized statuses, and cultural values, beliefs and biases to the therapeutic or working relationship. This workshop explores diversity and inclusion concepts including power and privilege; how Cultural Humility facilitates healthier working alliances; and what it means to be an effective ally for the LGBTQ+ community. -Define and distinguish between concepts of diversity, equity and inclusion -Recognize issues of power, privilege and oppression and its impact on the worker-client relationship -Identify the three dimensions of the philosophy and practice of cultural humility and its application to social work practice -Identify roles and responsibilities of an Ally This training is appropriate for child welfare case managers, social workers, mental health counselors and others who work with children, youth and adults.
