At the conclusion of this program, participants will: 1. Describe the current prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the United States; 2. Describe why AD initially impacts short-term memory; 3. Identify which stage of AD is the longest: 4. Describe the roles of the various lobes of the brain; 5. Describe at least two types of memory; 6. Provide at least two examples of Maslow's "basic needs"; 7. Describe why it is important to know how the patient lived prior to AD; 8. Demonstrate "validation" and describe why it is an important communication technique: 9. Describe at least two ways in which a family can evaluate an assisted living or skilled nursing facility.
