Course overview

This 90-minute view-on-demand, recorded webinar provides an overview of essential elements in the process of evaluating and assessing Executive Functions (EF) in children and teens. The presenter reviews information as it relates to those with challenges such as Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, learning disorders, and other developmental delays. A review of current research on EF development is followed by an exploration of common coexisting conditions and implications for learning and development. The presenter views evaluation using a three-tiered process, including highly formalized instruments, rating scales and inventories, and informal observation and interview. Multiple instruments are evaluated, and case studies are utilized to provide information on linking assessment to intervention. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) define executive functions and how they impact the quality of daily living, (2) list four conditions that put children at great risk for weak EF skill development, (3) state the advantages and cautions of each of the three tiers of evaluation, (4) identify intervention goals based on assessment feedback, and (5) List at least four tools to evaluate and assess EF in children and teens. This distance-learning, independent format is offered at 0.15 CEUs, Introductory Level, OT Service Delivery, and targeted to introductory- to intermediate-level OTs, SLPs, teachers, parents, and other professionals working with children and teens with executive functioning challenges. The course instructor, Lori Benson Adams, MEd, is an educational intervention specialist and owner of Breakthrough Learning Solutions in Atlanta, Georgia. She has over 35 years of experience with students who experience sensory, learning, behavioral, and executive function challenges.
