Course overview

Occupational therapists are not always comfortable with evaluating and reporting on functional oculomotor skills. This course provides essential knowledge about the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and how it impacts functional ocular motor skills in the school setting. Confidently evaluating the VOR helps ease report writing and treatment planning when addressing visual deficits. Use of videos, pictures, and case studies create a well-rounded understanding of the VOR and ocular motility. This 2-hour, view-on-demand, recorded webinar improves the way occupational therapists gather and assess for visual information in school and clinic settings. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) list two treatment strategies to improve VOR function, (2) identify how the vestibular ocular reflex relates to ocular motor skills and head control, (3) state three clinical observations to assess vestibular-ocular deficits, and (4) identify four areas of ocular-motor deficits that impact students in the school setting. This distance-learning, independent format is offered at 0.2 CEUs, Intermediate Level, OT Service Delivery, and targeted to intermediate- to advanced-level OTs and COTAs. The course instructor, Karin H. Warner, MOT OTR/L, has been in practice since 1996. During her well-rounded career, she worked in a variety of settings including public and charter schools, Rady's Children's Hospital, home health, and private practice. As a speaker and presenter, Karin traveled to over 15 states to instruct seminars on handwriting, visual skills, laterality, and hand development. In 2007, she spoke at the Occupational Therapy Association of California's Spring Symposium, where she first presented the "Solving the Handwriting Puzzle" program. In 2021, she spoke at the Occupational Therapy Association of California's Annual Conference on "Functional Vestibulo-Ocular Skills in the School Setting." Karin published an article in Behavioral Aspects of Visual Care, titled "Understanding Occupational Therapy's Role in Sensory Integration: Identifying and Describing How Sensory Processing Disorders Affect Vision and Behavior." Karin spoke at California's Regional Vision Therapists Forum in 2000.
