Up to 50% of women with uterine fibroids experience symptoms that negatively impact health outcomes and quality of life. Traditional management of these symptoms can be invasive and accompanied by adverse effects. The recent development and approval of oral gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists present an alternative management option, depending on symptom severity and patient-related considerations. As patients and prescribers consider options, clinicians will need adequate drug knowledge to compare and contrast novel therapies against traditional regimens. Healthcare professionals will also require the skills to effectively weigh treatment risks vs. benefits to provide patient-centered recommendations and counseling. This activity reviews the pathophysiology of uterine fibroids to explain the rationale behind the development and pharmacologic therapies to manage symptoms. The types of symptoms and their corresponding medical management options will be covered, with focus on the safety and efficacy of each drug class. Additional emphasis will be placed on evidence supporting the approval of the oral GnRH agonists and their place in therapy.
