While cardiogenic shock is a complication experienced by less than 10% of patients hospitalized for either myocardial infarction or heart failure, the use of temporary mechanical circulatory support devices has increased dramatically over the last decade. These patients require unique pharmacotherapy. Moreover, the devices used pose a fascinating intersection of drug and device in that these advanced devices require specific purge solutions and other pharmacotherapy support. There is a high risk for unsafe medication practices and essential familiarity of this topic can aid inpatient pharmacists and clinicians when these devices are brought to ensure safe and appropriate use by the institution. The purpose of this activity is to review core concepts related to cardiogenic shock management and provide a foundation for more advanced discussion of medications and devices, with particular focus on the role of the pharmacist and other clinicians in managing these unique but high risk mechanical support systems used in this patient population.
