What is your attitude toward yourself? Watson (2018) states nurses who are unkind to themselves may not be as caring toward patients. In other words, if you lack self-empathy, how will you have empathy for others? Research shows that undergraduate nursing students begin to lose their empathy by the second year of nursing school. Globally, nurses are showing a decrease in empathy over time due to burnout, work overload and increasing experiences with workplace violence. Work-related stress and social support are also associated with declining empathy among seasoned nurses. Most significant to this offering, studies have reported that empathy is associated with a professional attitude and reflective practice, though lacking is social- emotional empathy training in nursing curriculum and empathy continuing education and in-service education. This offering, "Is a Nursing Career Kryptonite to Empathy? Putting the Care Back in Nursing Care," aims to uncover some truths about this superpower and how awareness of trends affecting empathy can shed light on how we as nursing professionals can recharge our empathic superpower and bring back the care in nursing care.
