Course overview

Financial literacy has been defined as the knowledge and skills contributing to informed and effective decisions of managing personal money. Financial literacy may also improve professional satisfaction of nurses as nurses who understand financial management feel empowered to make informed financial decisions. These feelings of empowerment and confidence can decrease financial stress for nurses and increase career flexibility. Although nursing school covers a variety of clinical and professional topics, personal financial literacy is not usually included in undergraduate or graduate nursing curriculum. At the graduate level, nurses in an executive tract may have coursework in the financial aspects of the nurse executive role which may not translate easily to personal finance. Upon reaching money and investment milestones, nurses begin planning for career shifts like pursuing different nursing roles, increasing flexibility, and retirement. This offering has been developed to assist nurses in knowing how to access money from accounts when ready, have sufficient funds throughout life, use taxes to their benefit, establish generational wealth, and create a legacy.
