Course overview

The prevalence rates of substance use (SU) among individuals with mild to borderline intellectual disability (MBID) range from nearly non-existent to highly prevalent. This could be due to changes in methodology between various studies. Even though SU has become increasingly popular among people with MBID, addiction medicine has mostly overlooked the topic. This course focuses on addressing the prevalence, assessment, and treatment of substance use (SU) among children, adolescents, and adults with mild to borderline intellectual disability (MBID). This is accomplished by using the research articles on the material tab. This course is based on the reading-based online article, "A Systematic Review of Substance Use (Disorder) in Individuals with Mild to Borderline Intellectual Disability" by Dr. Neomi van Duijvenbode and Dr. Joanne E.L. VanDerNagel and "Substance use among individuals with mild intellectual disability or borderline intellectual functioning in residential care: Examining the relationship between drinking motives and substance use" by Dr. Esmee P. Schijven et al. This course is based on the reading-based online article, Substance Use Among Individuals With Mild Or Borderline Intellectual Disability created by Dr. Esmee P.
