Course overview

The continuing medical education mission of the Pacific Chapter of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society is to develop and promote programs that improve the scientific knowledge of physicians and other allied health professionals, in the Pacific Coast and Western regions of the United States and Canada, in matters related to undersea and hyperbaric environments and appropriate applications of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Objectives: Appreciate the value of the Long Beach Wound Score for objectively quantifying the seriousness of wounds, guiding management, and confirming progress. Know the algorithmic approach for determining indications for hyperbaric oxygen for wounds with specific attention to diabetic foot ulcers. Learn how to apply ancillary Wellness and Goal Scores for salvage versus amputation decisions regarding the transitional wound in the zone between Problem and End-stage types. Be able to establish value of interventions using a simplified outcome scoring system. List and describe methods of assessing peripheral vascular status, apply this knowledge to clinical practice. Review the history of dressing selections, the applicable codes, formal testing of products, an approach to selection decisions, and documentation. Appreciate features of diagnosis and management for pyoderma. Gain additional descriptive abilities to assess a chronically non-healing wound and learn about resources to develop this skill set further. Review wound healing from a holistic perspective involving physiologic, pathologic, pharmacologic, physical, and other factors to further a wound care management plan for difficult patients. Gain knowledge on the diagnosis and treatment for Pyoderma.
