Learn moreCourse overview
Research has shown that individuals in underserved cultural groups can have some reluctance to engage in treatment or can prematurely end treatment based on communication issues between the individual and a medical/psychological provider. This is a systematic review of literature exploring types of communication affecting engagement in mental health settings among minorities. The authors offer recommendations for how clinicians may improve communication with clients from underserved populations to for how clinicians may help prevent these clients from disengaging from behavioral health services. This course is based on the article, Clinician Descriptions of Communication Strategies to Improve Treatment Engagement by Racial/Ethnic Minorities created by Neil Krishan Aggarwal, M.D. in 2016.
