This course examines substance abuse and psychiatric symptoms in Hispanic adolescents. Using a pool of treatment seeking Hispanic adolescents, the study used variables such as age, gender, preferred language, internal psychiatric disorders, external psychiatric disorders, mixed psychiatric disorders, type of drug, polysubstance use, and co-occurring disorders. Even in a community sample, these authors found that co-occurring psychiatric and substance abuse was more common than not. This course is based on the reading-based online article, The Comorbidity of Psychiatric and Substance Use Disorders Among Hispanic Adolescents created by Karina A. Gattamorta, PhD, Maite P.
