Course overview

Social workers have been increasingly using technology to deliver services to clients, communicate with clients, gather information about clients, communicate with and about colleagues, and educate students and practitioners new ethical challenges come to the forefront. Recently, these dramatic changes in the ways that social workers use technology have led to major efforts to develop new ethical standards in the profession. This course discusses the importance of developing risk management strategies and contains recommendations for the ethical use of social media. There are two articles that must be read for this course. Please Note: As with most of our courses based on freely-available online articles, we have no business relationship with the authors of the course materials for this course. This course is based on the article, Ethical Standards for Social Workers’ Use of Technology: Emerging Consensus created by Frederic G. Reamer, Ph.D. in 2018 and the article, Social Media & Social Work Ethics: Determining Best Practices in an Ambiguous Reality created by Elizabeth Harbeck Voshel, ACSW, LMSW et al. in 2015.
