The negative consequences of traumatic experiences are well documented in the literature and includes such difficulties as PTSD, substance abuse, premature mortality, and suicidality. An emerging area of research as it pertains to traumatic stress reactions is that of positive psychology, and more specifically, posttraumatic growth. Most would consider posttraumatic growth to be inherently positive, but the research suggests that it can have both beneficial and detrimental effects. This article presents findings of a study that examined the association between posttraumatic growth and loneliness in a cohort of combat veterans of the 1973 Yom Kippur War. This course is based on the article, Growing Apart: A Longitudinal Assessment of the Relation Between Post-traumatic Growth and Loneliness Among Combat Veterans created by Jacob Y. Stein, PhD, et al. in 2018.
