This 1 CE Contact Hour course is approved by the NCBTMB. The course (presented as a PPT) defines the magnitude of human trafficking and its unfortunate relation to the massage profession (as many as 9000 massage businesses utilizing slave labor, according to the Polaris Project). In many of these cases, the businesses are prostituting trafficked victims under the guise of massage therapy. The learning objectives for this course are to inform massage therapists of the realities of human trafficking: the different types of human trafficking; the association it has to massage therapy; the types of people who are most actively trafficked; the fallout those victims are most likely to suffer; the fallout on legitimate massage businesses; the fact that human trafficking occurs everywhere, not just in urban areas; a summary of what regulatory boards can do; what FL requires of massage therapists and businesses pertaining to human trafficking, a summary of what the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards is doing to educate and assist regulatory boards and massage therapists in combatting human trafficking; how massage therapists can recognize potential signs of human trafficking, how to report suspected trafficking, and further resources for educational purposes.
