Course overview

This webinar presents the variety and nature of self-help groups, also known as mutual help, mutual aid, or recovery support groups, that help clients with substance use disorders. Alcoholics Anonymous and numerous other 12 Step groups, secular groups, spiritual/religious groups, and less known alternative groups provide a wealth of support that is identified as available resources. The different types of recovery support groups and their philosophies are reviewed which will help clinicians make informed referrals to complement and extend the effects of professional drug addiction treatment. The rationale and benefits of self-help groups are discussed to increase knowledge of how and why participation helps.
