Course Objective The purpose of the course is to increase the healthcare provider's understanding of terminology related to telephone triage nursing, good communication, decision-making, the use of decision support tools, and guidelines and telephone triage nursing protocols. This course additionally briefly covers nursing documentation, potential legal, ethical, and risks management concerns. Learning Objectives Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: Define "telephone triage nursing" and other related terminology. Discuss the different types of calls i.e., prescription refill, appointment request, urgent, ect... Discuss how to effectively listen, communicate, and assess. Enhance your critical thinking skills. Discuss the essentials of safe, effective, and appropriate telephone triage assessment and use of telephone triage guidelines. Overview Telephone triage nursing is complex, serves a diverse population in age, culture, and complaints. Clinical providers require formalized training, must meet practice standards, and require some clinical background. Telephone triage nursing is overseen by a physician and is nurse led. Decision support tools help nurses make autonomous decisions, I.e., Schmitt-Thompson protocols and guidelines. Many decisions are knowledge and experienced based. This course provides a basic introduction to telephone triage nursing. The contents of the course help the learner to establish a foundation in telephone triage nursing . The learner: 1. is introduced to telephone triage nursing terminology and other related terms, 2. will be able to identify critical elements of telephone triage, 3. will be able to provide safe care advice, 4. will become familiar with the pro's and con's of telephone triage, 5. will learn how to effectively listen, communicate, and assess, and 6. will enhance/develop their critical thinking skills.
