Course overview

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is a significant contributor to mortality and morbidity. Decades of randomized control trials have demonstrated a complex relationship between atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and lipoproteins. Lipoprotein levels can be modified pharmacologically to lower the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and mortality. This can be accomplished safely and successfully using lipid-lowering medications, including statins. Pharmacists must be familiar with the various statin drugs and their indications and guidelines so they may recommend the best treatment option to their patients.
