Course overview

Academic expectations increase every year. Even preschool children are expected to write! Many children struggle with handwriting legibility because they experience issues with body positioning, hand dominance, grip, and more. Teachers, parents, and professionals working with children must understand the developmental sequence needed to write. In this 2-hour, view-on-demand, recorded webinar, participants learn easy, inexpensive adaptations and techniques that can be used in the classroom, at home, or in the clinic. This course addresses (a) promoting good posture while learning how to make your own adaptations, (b) shoulder stability exercises that can be done anywhere, (c) bilateral coordination and the helping hand, (d) determining hand dominance, (e) facilitating wrist extension, (f) grip explanation and techniques, and (g) grip problem-solving opportunities. At the end of this course, you will be able to (1) state the benefits of promoting good posture and seating adaptations, (2) identify strategies to address shoulder stability and bilateral coordination, (3) list strategies that can be used to support left-handed writers, and (4) describe approaches to develop and correct ineffective pencil grips. This distance-learning, interactive format is offered at 0.2 CEUs, Introductive Level, OT Service Delivery, and targeted to introductory- to intermediate-level OTs, COTAs, teachers, and parents. The course instructor, Kim Wiggins, OTR/L, is an experienced occupational therapist specializing in the treatment of children since 2001. She is a full-time therapist at a City School District in upstate New York, owner of www.OTKimWiggins.com, and has been a nationally known speaker since 2011. Kim is certified in Mobile Devices for Children with Disabilities, Puzzle Art Therapy, Handwriting Without Tears, Zaner Bloser, The Listening Program, and as an Irlen Screener.
