Course overview

Trauma is closely intertwined with social conditions, such as wars, social inequality and domestic power relationships. Psychiatry has largely relied on diagnosing individuals out of the context of social conditions. However, social justice and universal access to optimal treatment interventions are critical dimensions in both the prevention and treatment of traumatic stress. This session will examine the dissemination of optimal trauma interventions in underprivileged populations, and the relevance of social justice in recovery from trauma. We will discuss research that shows how trauma's symptoms, such as self-harming behavior, suicidality, eating disorders, and substance abuse, can result in clients being seen and labeled as 'borderline' or as 'addicts' in hospital, low income, and community settings. Trauma-Informed Stabilization Treatment (TIST) was specifically developed for a community hospital setting to provide a trauma-informed approach to the challenge of self-destructive symptoms and chronic institutionalization. We will also discuss the extent of our professional responsibilities in the face of nuclear expansion, militarism, greed, a culture of psychological abuse, and the destruction of our only habitat.
